Full Throttle Conditioning - Written by Ross Enamait

Guns and Roses, Metallica, Van Halen and Kiss are all hardcore rock and roll music bands. They signify high energy and intensity. I need to tell you that Ross is the same way in his philosophy to working out.
This book and DVD series is awesome. Ross must be a bit crazy the way he works. This guy defines the concept of "Work Ethic" in this educational series.
Why is this important to me?
I always want to make sure that when I create a video that it is worth it from your standpoint. This program is vitally important if you want to step up your work out game and get into really good shape. You can use some of these tools as a beginner but you will see that Ross's stuff escalates quickly.
Also, if you want to maximize Endurance and Energy then this is the program for you. Ross is a combat sports training expert and understands what it takes to train effectively to win.
If you are a boxer, MMA fighter or wrestler then this program will help you build up your gut system to peak performance. The well-conditioned athlete will outperform the more talented athlete in the later rounds - EVERY Time.
There is a ton of great stuff in this program and I will profile a few major points and show a couple of clips of Ross himself getting stuff done.
1.3 Energy Systems - Ross discusses in full detail ATP-PC, glycogen and aerobic energy systems. He uses research and goes into detail how these systems work. In a nutshell, you have three energy systems which consists of two anaerobic and one aerobic. The goal in this type of working out is to increase the Net Work Output and maximize all three energy systems to do that. If you are a boxing or MMA fan, then you may have noticed that in the beginning of fights, the combat athletes have more power in their strikes than they do later in the fight. This has to do with the anaerobic system being torn down and losing energy. Ross shows you how you can increase the anaerobic work capacity by using aerobic rest periods to increase total work output. This is great stuff. Two of the best fighters - Manny Pacquiao and Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather have unbelievable endurance and energy and that is why they have been champions for so long.
2. Interval Training - Interval training is the best way to enhance aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. Research shows that intense, intermittent training offers the best of both worlds. Side Note: If you want to lose weight / fat, then this type of working out will melt it away. Interval training provides a mechanism for you to burn calories all day. Research shows that sprint training, interval work and other forms of intensity helps the body burn calories - ALL DAY. This secret is the key for you to melt away fat. You can run long distances and that work out will burn more calories DURING THE WORK OUT. It is the rest of the day that counts if you want to burn calories and Interval Training is the key.
3. Variety - The Biological law of accommodation. This law states that the body's response to a constant stimulus decreases over time. I never knew they had a technical name for boredom. If you have exercised for any period of time then you have hit plateaus in your workout routines. The body and mind is a magnificent combination and allows you to adapt to stimulus. Some work out programs get around this by using muscle confusion. Basically they vary the types of exercises you do. This law is relevant in every part of your life. If you have not had a New York Strip steak in ages and love steak then when you finally have one, it tastes great. If you have one every day for dinner this month then you get bored and it is no longer great. The same holds true for exercise routines.
Ross combines different exercises with full intensity and timed relaxation between sets. Remember the goal of his workout is to maximize work output in the shortest amount of time.
Basically this is the holy grail of working out because you can compound your results in less time. If you have watched any of my summaries then you know that I am a big fan of compound effects and preserving time.
The clip I am going to show is an advanced clip so do not get discouraged if you cannot do it. I will bet that 98% of the population including me can't do this stuff but it is a great goal to strive for.
Full Throttle Conditioning is an excellent program that allows you to step up your exercise game. One thing that the research shows is that your GH (Growth Hormone) increases naturally using Interval training. This is the key to staying young. As GH depletes over time, you lose energy and the zest for life. Interval training will help you increase your energy for the long haul.
I hope you have found this short video summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days.
One thing you can take away from this book is to jump rope. I know this sounds basic but a lot of people don't like to run. Rope jumping with intensity will trigger fat burning and build all three of your energy systems. Try it as part of your exercise routine for one month and chart your progress. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Combat Conditioning Functional Exercises for Fitness and Combat Sports by Matt Furey

Combat Conditioning was the first book that introduced me to body weight exercises for functional strength and endurance. I was the type of kid in high school sports that was the proverbial "no talent ass clown." What I mean by this was that I was very strong but natural talent escaped me. I always vowed that there are people that are much more talented but I would never be out worked. Growing up in the work out craze of Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Pumping Iron" movie got me into weight lifting with all my friends. Now when you are young and you simple pound out weights to see how strong you are, bad things end up happening. When I received a physical before the starting season of Varsity football, the doctor looked at me and politely said - "Hey idiot, have you ever heard of stretching"? Needless to say the quest began to look for a better way to exercise and gain functional strength. Lawyer Note: I hate these but they are important. With any exercise routines, please check with your Doctor's to make sure you are able to perform these routines.
Why is this important to me?
This book will help you acquire knowledge on body weight exercises that help in three areas: Strength, Endurance and Flexibility. If these three things are not important to you then please save yourself 5 minutes and shut off the video. Otherwise please continue on with me.
Have you ever seen any of the following: Great MMA fighters, cirque du soleil or a gymnastics competition? All of these phenomenal athletes have functional strength. This means that they can do things with their body that 90 percent of the population cannot. The good news is that 90 percent can do these things if they change up on their exercise routines. Another book you should check out is Convict Conditioning. This focused more on muscle, joint and tendon strength. What is beneficial about that is you can keep that strength well into your seventies.
Don't get me wrong - any type of exercise is better than none. If you are doing nothing and start doing weight lifting then please keep doing it. But if you want a cheap way to work out with compound results then this book is for you. One big problem with weight lifting by itself is that it utilizes muscle isolation. This means that if you do curling then you isolate the movement to the bicep muscle. This does nothing to create functional strength for your tendons or joints. The human body was engineered to work together so why not shorten your work out and do compound exercises to maximize your results. If you did a simple pull up then you still exercise your bicep but you also engage your back, forearms, shoulders and core along with creating functional strength.
Matt describes his Holy Grail of working out which he coins the Royal Court. I will explain each exercise.
The Hindu squat is an excellent exercise. When you start out you can do a half squat like with your arms in front of you parallel to the floor but as you progress and build up strength in your knees, you will want to do a full squat with the back of your thighs touching the back of your calves.
Strong legs do a body good. When you work on your legs, you engage the whole body and burn calories all day even after the work out. The legs consist of the biggest muscles in your body and it shows the next day when they are sore.
When doing Hindu squats, work up to doing three sets of 100. Doing the royal court in 3 set cycles is a great work out that does not take much time. If you travel then this is a perfect routine because it does not take long at all.
The Hindu pushup is different than a regular pushup. Start with your feet a bit wider than shoulder width apart and your butt in the air. Push through in an arcing motion(similar to downward facing dog in Yoga). Try to work up to 3 sets of 50 repetitions. If you have never done these before and can only do a couple, do not get discouraged. Like anything new, it takes practice to build up.
This exercise will help you with strength, back flexibility and endurance. Enjoy!
The back bridge gets a ton of bad press. People think that it is bad for your back and neck. Like anything else, please do what is comfortable for you.
You can bridge three ways. Think of this as an exercise and NOT a stretch. You will feel your body warm up doing this exercise.
You can start with a work out ball if you cannot do the neck bridge. Then as you progress, you can move into the neck bridge (on your head) and then the gymnastics bridge (with your arms and no head).
Please note that if you never did these before then they will seem difficult at first. Do not get frustrated. Before I started bridging, I had terrible neck pain and back pain. Go figure because I was only doing heavy weight lifting with squats and bench press. Anyway, when I started doing the bridging, all of the pain went away.
The stretching in your back and neck feel great and the results will speak for themselves. Note: Do NOT force this exercise. Take your time and build up to it.
Combat Conditioning is a great book to introduce you to body weight exercises for functional strength, endurance and flexibility. I was watching a discovery show in which they were making a martial arts video game. They showed a man doing a unique exercise.
There were telephone polls in the ground at varying heights in two rows. He was jumping from one to another and landing on one leg. He would jump to the other and do a one leg full squat with his other leg fully extended in a kicking position. This is a true test of functional strength and flexibility. Oh BTW, this man was 75 years old. Results that last a life time are something I am always striving for.
I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days. One thing you can take away from this book is the royal court. Try it as part of your exercise routine for one month and chart your progress. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Flood Your Body With Oxygen - Therapy for Our Polluted World - Written by Ed McCabe

This book is a 600 page encyclopedia about Oxygen therapies. I must admit that I was not familiar at all with the power of oxygen as it relates to health and performance. I find it important to study and research wellness especially with the state of our "Health Care System" or better yet our "Sick Care System"
Why is this important to me? I ask this question so I don't waste your time. I believe that without health, you have nothing. Everything else can be achieved if you have your health. To that end, it makes sense to study it.
1. Symptom vs. Root Cause - Have you ever considered the treatment for cancer? Millions of dollars per year are donated to cancer research and some of it is excellent yet over 700,000 people will die from it in the United States. The treatment for cancer is to poison it (Chemo-therapy), burn it (Radiation) and cut it out (Surgery). Have you ever thought about the root cause? The treatment gets rid of the cancer as a symptom but the root cause usually is not addressed.
2. Environmental Factors - Are you familiar with Doctor Oz? He has a daytime TV show about health. One of his colleagues Dr. Hyman talks about core root causes of disease like heavy metal toxicity, mineral deficiencies and acidity in the body. The food supply, pollution and stress are key factors that need to be reviewed to attain true health and address root causes of health problems.
Flood Your Body with Oxygen has a ton of information about the benefits of Oxygen along with case studies. The book is too massive to review in full so I will point out a few key factors.
1. Why Oxygen? - The premise of oxygen therapy is so simple that it seems too easy to be true. Here it is - Anaerobic disease cannot live in Aerobic environments. In English, this means that fish cannot live out of water and we cannot live underwater. Water born viruses, bacteria and other disease cannot live in oxygenated environments. Think of the environment being your blood steam and lymphatic system. The brain runs on oxygen and glucose. You can survive without eating for 30 days, water for 7 days but go without oxygen for a few minutes and you end up with severe brain damage and most likely death. Oxygen is the backbone to health and the environment does not provide enough. Oxygen Therapies include food grade 35% Hydrogen peroxide, Ozone, Hyperbaric Chambers and oxygen supplements.
2. PH Acid / Alkali - Anthony Robbins has done a ton of research on alkalinity in the body. The benefits are extraordinary. Example: In a highly acidic body, cholesterol forms to protect the artery walls. A symptom remedy is to take Lipitor and make the drug companies rich. This does nothing to address the cause which is a highly acidic environment. Alkali foods and oxygen therapies reduce acid.
3. Case Studies - Ed profiles hundreds of case studies on HIV and Cancer patients that were on the brink of death that utilized Oxygen therapies and survived. You do not have to be sick to do this. OxyWater is a drink that has tons of testimonials from athletes that use it to improve their oxygen intake and performance.
4. Politics & Money - Sick care is big business. It takes an investment of $800 million dollars to get an FDA approval. How do companies do that when Oxygen therapies like H2O2 can be utilized for 10 cents per day? How do you patent these therapies when they are common knowledge and not patentable? The answer that Ed gives in his book is that you discredit these therapies and push expensive medical ones. Some of the commercials for prescription drugs are sickening. You take Abilify to help with depression but your head may explode and you may die but take it anyway. It is absolutely ridiculous.
Before I do any book reviews on health, I do like to test things on my own. First I wanted to do the 35% Hydrogen Peroxide cleanse outlined in the One Minute Cure (see website). I did this and my energy levels sky rocketed. I was able to write my first book with this extra energy because I felt the extra brain power because of the oxygen. Now, a couple of caveats, #1 - this could be a placebo effect and #2 - my first book may suck but I will continue to use these therapies because they make sense. I will report back because each year I typically get a cold twice per year. Ed mentions that he has not been sick in 15 years yet before oxygen therapies, he got sick often. I am very curious if this works and will let you know since I am only 90 days into this. Also, I was able to improve my PH alkali reading with Oxygen. Tony Robbins travels the world and sees millions of people each year and does not get sick either. He is a big proponent of alkali blood. The key is to have a clean internal environment so disease cannot grow. I WILL LET YOU KNOW IF THESE SIMPLE CONCEPTS WORK ON ME OVER THE LONG HAUL.
I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days. One thing you can take away from this book is water born disease cannot live in oxygen rich environments. There are several research papers and this is a well-known fact. I encourage you to be responsible for your own wellbeing and health because nobody cares as much as you do. You cannot help others if you don't have your health.

The Gift of Success and Happiness - Written by Chip Sawicki and Vernon Roberts

Chip was kind enough to send me his book and since I have an affinity for business, I read it. Success and Happiness are correlated but causation needs to be studied. What I mean is Success does not cause happiness and happiness does not cause success. The correlation of success to improve happiness may be there if you have your priorities straight.
Why is this important to me?
Success and Happiness are important to everyone and the Holy Grail in life. I wonder why they don't teach it in college. Jim Rohn said "Make rest a necessity not an objective. This thought is the key to unlocking the mysteries of life. Chip and Vernon dedicate 240 pages to success and happiness and one critical detriment is laziness. When you make rest an objective, you grind 5 days a week in a job you hate to simply load up on the weekend or wish for retirement.
When rest is a necessity, you are now busy crafting your life around your "compelling why".
Unfortunately people will spend more time planning a vacation then they do their life blueprint. This simple act is the biggest cause for an unfulfilling life. Utilizing the power of slight edge behavior and compounding, you can craft any life you choose. Think about this for moment. Can you commit to improving.1% per day in your activities? This is one tenth of one percent. If you did just that and did it daily, you would have improved yourself by more 30% in one year. The reason this is so strong because the improvement compounds on top of the last improvement. The opposite is also true. If you add one can a soda to your diet per day then in three years you will gain over 30 pounds.
Chip and Vernon cover all facets of life in this book. I will cover a few key points for the sake of time.
1. Strategic Contrarian - This is a mindset to go against the grain. This is very helpful in many aspects of life. The easiest example is seen in stock market investing. Logic dictates that you buy low and sell high to make a profit. Everybody knows this but consistently the herd buys when the market moves up and sells when the market moves down resulting in lost money. Using strategic contrarian thought in different aspects of your life will help immensely. Another example is job mindset. How many people do you know that say "it is not my job". This is a career killer yet many people feel entitled. Contrarian thought dictates you work hard and smart now and the money will follow.
2. You can do ANYTHING, but you can't do EVERYTHING - This is great advice. Trying to accomplish everything sets us up for failure and unhappiness. Having realistic goals and to do's allows us to enjoy the wins without the guilt of not finishing everything. Striving for everything causes undo stress and burn out. Think with the end in mind. If this was your last day on earth then it makes sense to focus on the "ANYTHING" and not the "EVERYTHING".
3. Vernon's definition of happiness is when a person makes peace between his ambitions and his limitations. This is really profound advice. I may want to be a pro football player but genetics stand in the way. Understanding "true limitations" is the key to happiness. This does not mean make up an excuse and call it a limitation. This definition is critical for people that are truly "type A" personalities.
There are some great resources in the book and tools you can use to sculpt your life's script. I think Chip may have a PHD in Microsoft Excel. He has a spreadsheet to track anything you want as it relates the life cube laid out in the book.
I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days. One thing you can take away from this book is the power of thought. I picked the power of thought because to really get any use from the book, you have to know what success and happiness look like for you. That requires thought and reflection. If you made thought a daily calendar event then anything is possible.

Little Voice Master - Written by Blair Singer

The vision for the book is - To master the war between your ears and have an extraordinary life.
1. What is the little voice? The little voices are all the life experiences you have gained. Everybody has a photographic subconscious memory so all the life experiences from your teachers, parents, relatives, neighbors and friends have been recorded and make an impression on you.
2. Here is a real simplistic example: You are a sales person new in your career and you find it very difficult to pick up the phone and make calls. There are several potential reasons for this but here is one in particular that rings true for most of us. "Your mother always told you - NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS!" Now you come into sales and in order to eat, you need to talk to strangers. This is a prime example of the little voice holding you back.
Why is this important to me?
If I was spending my precious time listening to this video then the first question I would ask is - Why is this important to me?
There are several answers that Blair points out but the biggest reason is answered with another question - Are you where you want to be in life regardless of how you define it? Think in terms of health, wealth and relationships. If the answer to this question is no then 9 times out of 10 it is the little voice in your head that is holding you back.
Understanding and managing the little voice is the key to overcoming your self-limiting beliefs. What are self-limiting beliefs? Have any of these thoughts ever crossed your mind?
1. I won't make this shot.
2. Don't talk to strangers
3. I am pretty good but not that good.
4. Money is the root of all evil.
These are examples of self-limiting beliefs. Comfort zones are very powerful motivators either to do something or NOT do something. People will move into the range of their comfort zone. If you see yourself conceptually as a 6 on a ten scale then your performance will average over time to a 6.
Self-concept is different than roles. Understanding that you are a 10 with regard to your self-concept will automatically help on your role side. People may view this as arrogant but think for a moment. Look at a new born baby - are they anything less than a 10?
Understand that your role may fluctuate day to day as a sales person, or spouse or parent. You will do a great job one day and not so great the next. The key here is to learn and improve the role but always have the confidence to see yourself as a 10 on the identity side.
If you think about separating your roles from your identity then you can focus on your roles for improvement. You should not have to work on your identity. Your identity is a 10.
Blair describes 21 techniques to get control of your little voice. We will profile three here. Note that understanding self-limiting beliefs requires questioning what the little voice is saying. Work with somebody you trust and dig into these beliefs with effective questions. If you believe that money is the root of all evil, have a conversation with somebody to truly understand where that belief comes from. Ask questions and continually peel back the onion to get to the root belief and make sure you DO believe it.
1. Sell you to you. We spoke about Identity and Role differences and that I=10. When working with my team on this concept, I cannot tell you how many people fight me on this and sell themselves lower. This is the little voice telling you that you are not that good. Recognize you are an I=10 and good things will start to happen.
2. Anchor wins. Use your physical body to anchor wins. When you do something right then create a physical trigger that makes you feel powerful. This can be a clap of your hands or anything that makes you feel good. This will improve the Role performance when you have a new encounter. Let's say you just won a large new account. Anchor that feeling and before your next meeting with a potential new account, put yourself in that positive state by doing the physical anchor before the meeting.
3. Deal with Adversity - When you lose an account or anything of importance then understand that your Identity is still a 10. The role that day may have been a 5 thus you can debrief and learn from the loss but it has NO EFFECT on your self-concept
I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit.
Habits form in as little as 21 days. I highly recommend that you give some thought to the Identity / Role concepts we discussed in the video. They can truly have a profound impact on your life.

Book Summary: The New Psycho-Cybernetics - The Science of Self-Improvement by Dr Maxwell Maltz

In every profession there are individuals that excel and can handle pressure. You see this all the time in Football, business and the political arenas. What makes some people excel under pressure and others fold? Can excellent performance under any circumstance be triggered on demand?
Why is this important to me?
I always want to ask this question as if I am sitting in your shoes. I don't want to waste your time. Do you know people who are gifted? There are gifted people in all areas of life, so why is it that so few actually become successful? Talent is not enough. Without hard and smart work ethic and a dedicated focus, success will be fleeting. Psycho-Cybernetics will show us how to tap into our vast sub-conscious mind to aid us in our quest for success, meaning and happiness.
Psycho-Cybernetics is divided into 16 chapters of excellent information. For the sake of time, I will profile the 3 key takeaways that resonated with me. All of the points we will chat about revolve around the following point. The conscious mind can process roughly 40 bits per second while the subconscious mind can process 40 million bits per second. Understanding this difference and programming the subconscious mind will aid us in our quest for success, meaning and happiness.
1. Self-Image - This has to be the number one key to success or failure. Your current position in life right now is exactly proportional to your self-image or self-concept. What is the little voice inside of your head saying? The key takeaway here is to transform your inner critic into your inner coach. Controlling and molding your self-image is the foundation of the book. Tony Robbins has an excellent program that nails this point home. If you examine an excellent part of your life, you will find out that your blue print (BP) is equal to your Life Condition (LC). Likewise where there are issues in your life, the BP is not equal to the Life condition. The key here is to really understand and question your blue print and decide if you need to improve the life condition or change the blue print.
2. Automatic Success Mechanism or Automatic Failure Mechanism - Your brain acts as a guidance system toward things that you focus your attention on. This is known as slight edge behavior. The things you do and focus on daily are driving you toward a destination. Do you know where that destination is? If not then you need to spend the time to figure it out otherwise you will become part of someone else's plan for YOUR life. The automatic success/failure mechanism is like a torpedo that is attracted to its destination. The guidance portion of the torpedo is dictated through your self-image. Self-destruction happens from within. Conditioning, habit and outside influences are how your self-image is molded. If you were raised being told you are nothing and will fail at everything then your self-image will prove it. If that motivates you to do better and you don't believe it then you will succeed. Likewise if you drink the cool aid then you will live a life of unhappiness.
3. Conditioning, focus & Imagination - You can condition yourself to perform in any situation. The key component is to focus and change your physiology. Tony Robbins uses incantations to do this. An incantation is a body state change along with an affirmation. Incantations are stronger than affirmations because you are engaging your whole body. Think of this is a habit or ritual before you do something. Jack Nicolas, the great golfer, had a ritual before every swing. They analyzed him and Greg Norman and found that the time Jack Nicolas took before every swing was exactly the same regardless if he was up or down in the tournament. Greg Norman on the other hand took longer when he was winning and as he started falling behind, his pre-swing routine shortened. This is a mental breakdown and loss of focus resulting in a loss for Greg Norman. Imagination is one of the most powerful skills we have as humans. Most great thinkers in history give credence to imagination over IQ. Einstein used his vivid imagination and dreams to uncover the theory of relativity.
Psycho-Cybernetics is an excellent body of work that needs to be studied. Being able to trigger success on demand through focus and control of your self-image is a fascinating concept. The subconscious mind can programmed to aid you in crafting an unbelievable life.
I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days. One thing you can take away from this book is the power of focus. I chose focus because you can start using a simple exercise called the Einstein Distraction drill. This will build your level of focus and allow you to master the techniques outlined in the book. Simple download the Einstein distraction drill from successprogress.com to gain the benefits of enhanced focus.

How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less - Written by Nicholas Boothman

Relationships and connection is critical and is a core human need. Belonging is part of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. One of the fastest growing technology company's and the youngest billionaire in history is Facebook & Mark Zuckerberg. The whole concept of the site is simply connecting with other people. Facebook has a value of $50 Billion. This topic is a big deal. The secret of success is not very hard to figure out. The better you are at connecting with other people, the better the quality of your life.
Why is this important to me?
This begs additional questions:
1.) Are you where you want to be in your career? I used to think that communications majors in college were the easiest and quickest way to get a degree with little value. Needless to say, I was WRONG. Communicating and connecting with co-workers, customers, suppliers and other partners is critical if you want to excel in your career. We have all sat through bad business presentations. Think about it - Why were they bad? Typically the person giving it was reading it, not making eye contact and not expressing passion toward the end game.
2.) Are you shy and nervous about networking? I have a lot of respect for people who can walk into a room and hold conversations with strangers. Highly successful salespeople tend to be really good at this. For the other 80% of the population this is as nerve racking as public speaking and death. The ideas in this book will help overcome these fears.
3.) Do you understand how people process information and learn? There are three dominate forms for how people process information and learn. They are Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. In a nutshell, people process either through their eyes (Visual), through their ears (auditory) and/or through feelings (Kinesthetic)
This book is broken down into three parts. I will touch on each part in summary for this review. The first section is First Contact
1.Benefits of connecting- A Harvard Medical study showed that people who lack social and community ties are almost three times more likely to die of medical illness than those who have more extensive contacts.
2. Why 90 seconds- People make judgments very quickly. It is the fight or flight primal instinct that is responsible for this. This is why bad first impressions are hard to overcome.
3. Communicating - People need to understand that the meaning of communication lies in the RESPONSE it gets. This is very simple yet brilliant.
Building rapport is critical for successful relationships.
1.) A real useful attitude is far more effective when building rapport. Having an open mind and a positive outlook will bear more fruit then being closed off and guarded. Remember people make snap decisions based on energy, body language and tonality.
2.) Actions speak louder than words - We all know that talk is cheap and people either do what they say or they don't. In this context, your body language speaks louder than your words. Mixed messages and flirting are probably the two biggest examples of this.
3.) People like people like themselves - People as a whole are self-centered. Again this is by design for survival. The best way you can build rapport with people in another country is to simply attempt to speak their language. This is a thoughtful gesture and people appreciate the effort. Dale Carnegie's book How to Win Friends and Influence People really dives into great detail on this subject. Perhaps we will profile this book in a future summary.
Three secrets of communication that Nicholas points out are the following:
1. Listening - Active listening is imperative for successful relationships. It is almost comical how well this works to create bonding and rapport with people. Active Listening means actually listening and NOT waiting to talk. There is a big difference. This becomes readily apparent in couples getting a divorce. Neither spouse is listening when they argue but are at an emotional level of shouting to make a point. Active listening leads to enlighten and true understanding. You can engage your whole body in listening and being attentive in the conversation.
2. Power of Questions - To enhance active listening, use open ended questions to dig into the details of the conversation you are having. Avoid questions like: Do you, Are you, Is it etc. this leads to a YES/NO answer with no room to expand. Instead ask leading questions like: How did that happen? What was the outcome?, Tell me about....... These open ended questions along with active listening will make you a great conversationalists with very little talking. Be real - Remember the primal instincts that we talked about earlier. This is basically the BS detector. You need to be truly interested in the person you are talking to. This does not mean you need to agree and roll over when you don't. Be true to yourself as well.
3. Sensory Channels - We chatted earlier about Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic learners. Paying attention to eye movements and words will give you clues to what the dominate learning of the person you are talking to. There is a lot of information on NLP (Nero-Linguistic Programming) which we won't cover. One thing to take away according to the book - "The eyes server two purposes: one, roving around to see what is going on and two, activating sensory memory channels.
I hope you have found this short summary useful. The key to any new idea is to work it into your daily routine until it becomes habit. Habits form in as little as 21 days. I highly recommend you read this book and put the principles in place. One thing to make a habit is saying hello to people you see and walk past. I know this sounds corny, but do it and it will build your confidence in approaching people. My assumption on this is really simple: most people fear talking to strangers and thus will simply walk by you. Once you greet them, then they will remember you (assuming they see you again - at a store, gym etc.). Also, you may have a perception that the people that don't say hi are either jerks or conceited. Most people are not like this and the ones that are you can chalk up to a lesson.
Remember - Do the thing and you shall have the power!
